National Doughnut Week

I know what you are all thinking. National Doughnut Week… the best week ever right? Correct. AND to make it even better – National Doughnut Week is here to raise money by supporting The Children’s Trust – the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injuries.

If there was ever a time to buy a doughnut – it would be now. Forget the guilt – do it for the greater good of humanity.

SO – because it is the week of doughnuts – I was very kindly invited over to Dunn’s Bakery to try my hand at making my own doughnuts and seeing how the magic happens. I WAS SO EXCITED. Bright and early on Sunday morning, I headed to Dunn’s, whipped on an apron and got cracking. Not literally – I didn’t break one egg whilst I was there.

Check out my apron – I felt like a boss

mesmerised by the mixer

…One of the best perks of spending a Sunday morning in a bakery is that breakfast is a warm, delicious sausage roll. Possible the greatest sausage roll I have ever had in fact.

Rolling with my homies

Now this machine blew my mind. You basically put your dough(nuts) onto this big plate and pop it into the machine below. Then you pull the lever and boom – in about 7 seconds you have beautifully formed doughnuts… (make sure you watch this part in the video at the bottom of the post!)

Could easily be mistaken for Pizza Express Dough Balls..

Taking this very seriously.

After you have let them prove for a while, you can start with the frying… Head down to the video to watch this part.

Must be vigilant and do a quality test

Then it was decorating time. And oh my god this was fun. I wouldn’t say we are professionals – but we sure have the passion.

The finished result: and yes, you may slobber…

A little bit more info about NDW. National Doughnut Week was started by Christopher Freeman of Dunn’s Bakery back in 1991 and since then has sold over 14 million doughnuts (yum). It is now in its 25th year and its 11th year of supporting The Children’s Trust. The Children’s Trust is an amazing charity, provides expert rehabilitation, education, therapy and care to children with a brain injury across the UK.  Over the past 11 years, National Doughnut Week has raised an amazing £349,000 for The Children’s Trust – £37,901 was raised last year!

So make sure you head to The Children’s Trust website to find a bakery near you that is supporting National Doughnut Week and go and buy some doughnuts. For each doughnut bought, the bakeries will be dough-nating a certain amount to the charity. It is the perfect excuse to treat yourself to a sugary pick me up/ an entire box of sugary pick me ups.

I snapchatted my trip to the bakery (come and say hello if you don’t follow already : cocoachelsea) and I uploaded the story below, so make sure you have a watch for all the ‘Behind the Scenes’ bakery doughnut action. *Warning* this includes a jam explosion that some viewers might find offensive.

ALSO – HUGE DISCLAIMER – Uploading a snapchat story to youtube – doesn’t work as well as I thought. The size of the photos keep jumping around making it incredibly annoying to watch – so I am so SORRY for the annoyance. It annoys me too.

A HUGE thank you to Dunn’s Bakery and to Lewis for having me, and for not getting frustrated when I sprayed jam all over myself and decided to make mini doughnuts – I had such a brilliant, brilliant time.

The doughnuts tasted amazing, even if I do say so myself (although I can’t actually take any credit for this at all). Dunn’s is an amazing bakery – it literally smells like heaven and they make the most GORGEOUS cakes ever. Ok. I will calm down.

So PLEASE – do the right thing – go and buy a doughnut.

xx
